Samsung's Galaxy S5 Experience app

Samsung's Galaxy S5 Experience app lets you see some S5 features on your Nexus, Xperia, or another Android phone

Samsung's Galaxy S5 Experience app lets you see some S5 features on your Nexus, Xperia, or another Android phone
As of today, March 21, Samsung is allowing customers to try out the Galaxy S5 in various stores in select markets (starting with the US and Switzerland). However, in case you can’t visit a store that has the S5 on display, Samsung launched a Galaxy S5 Experience app that “provides interactive introduction on Galaxy S5 and Wearable Devices.”

Don’t expect the app to work as if you’re actually playing with a real Galaxy S5. This is merely a walkthrough of the main features that you’ll find on the new smartphone, including its camera, the S Health app, the Ultra Power battery saving mode, and so on. The app may appear a bit buggy, with flattened buttons in some cases - as it did on one of our Nexus 4 handsets (you can see that in the gallery below).

You can download the Samsung Galaxy S5 Experience app at the Google Play link found at the end of this article. You need to have a smartphone running Android 4.0 or later, with a screen resolution of at least 480 x 800 pixels, plus 1GB of RAM and a 1.0GHz processor. The app does not work on tablets.

Samsung will officially launch the new Galaxy S5 starting April 11 in lots of countries around the world.

Android Wear launcher

Android Wear launcher teardown and how to test it on your smartphone right now

Android Wear launcher teardown and how to test it on your smartphone right now
As we talked about earlier today, what we saw in the demos of Android Wear isn't really the Android system at all. The whole thing is essentially an app, an Android Wear launcher, as it were. And, because it is just an app, you had to know that it wouldn't be too long before the good fellows over at Android Police ripped open the APK and put it up for download.

Yep, that means right now you can download the Android Wear launcher and load it up on your smartphone to test out the preview. Of course, there are a few caveats here. First off, this isn't a real launcher replacement in the traditional sense, it is more of a replacement for your notification tray. Because of that, if you don't have any notifications waiting for you, there won't be anything to see or do in the Wear launcher. The other thing is that you need to be running Android 4.4 and you'll need to uninstall the Wear helper app that Google sent around to developers, if you have that installed.

The Wear launcher is quite responsive and smooth right now, which bodes well for the platform since the code won't be complete for a couple months at least. The guys at Android Police also pulled out a full set of icons, and Enrico Ros has also put up a few shots of the Wear UI, including the power down menu, and what looks like a countdown timer feature. Another interesting feature found in the code is a trigger for Daydreams, which is the screen saver function that was added to Android in version 4.2.

If you want to test out the Android Wear launcher, just head to the source.
